Dow and Sustainability

In 1996, Dow set 10 year sustainability goals for 2005 that focused on improving the company's environment, health and safety performance. The company met most of those goals, exceeded some, and came very close in most of the others. As part of its 2005 goals, Dow achieved a 22% reduction in energy intensity – saving around 900 trillion BTUs – reduced solid waste by 1.6 billion pounds and reduced water waste by 183 billion pounds. As a result, Dow's workplaces are safer, its facilities cleaner, its energy use more efficient and its corporate governance stronger and more vigilant.

Last summer, Dow announced its 2015 Sustainability Goals that not only focus on the company's own footprint, but also seek to address some of the most pressing economic, social and environmental concerns facing the global community over the next 10 years. The Goals have a broad external focus, reaching beyond commitments to reducing the Company's environmental footprint to focusing on issues such as climate change and energy efficiency, and product innovation to help make the world safer and more sustainable.
